Several translation softwares are able to automatically translate in a few seconds. The result gives a good idea of the content but is not good enough to be published.
The reason is not in the softwares. English, Chinese and all natural languages are full of ambiguïties that a Machine Translation software is unable to understand. To obtain a much better result, two conditions have to be met :
1) To prepare a special version of the source language where all ambiguïties are removed : Machine English (or Machine Chinese, etc.). It is a specialized job. Some try to skip this pre-editing step. In this case the result is bad.
2) To prepare a special dictionary for each language pair, one for English into German, one for English into French, etc.
The Machine Translation softwares translates this Machine English with only a few errors that are easily corrected by a human editor.
The system is cost effective when the source text is to be translated in more than one target language.
From the second language, the translation is free : you only pay for the edition !
For 4 target languages, the discount is 37 %. For 12 languages, it could be 0,50 € instead of 1,15 € by new word and the discount becomes 56,5 %.
More, for internal use, it is possible to skip the editing. At this moment, it costs only the (one time) price of translation into Machine English and the Machine Translation process itself which costs peanuts.
As no one company translates in all languages, Machine English also is useful to replace missing languages because it is easier to understand for every human reader than full english.
